“Novaya Gazeta” sees no progress in investigation into “chemical attack” on its office

Despite numerous street surveillance cameras, the law enforcement bodies failed to find a person who poured chemical liquid over the entrance to the building hosting the editorial office of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”. The investigations into attacks on the newspaper employees were also ineffective.

The incident was preceded by an article about investigation into extrajudicial executions in Chechnya posted by the “Novaya Gazeta” on the same day. Since 2017, the newspaper has been investigating mass arrests without trial, torture, and executions of more than 100 people in Chechnya in December 2016 and January 2017.

According to the “Novaya Gazeta”, on March 15, a man with a bicycle, dressed as a courier, drove up to the editorial office of the newspaper. The police arrived at the place of the incident. However, “the editorial office did not receive any official information about what had happened.”

Meanwhile, the attacker “was not found in hot pursuit.” The incident resembles an attack on the house of journalist Yulia Latynina.

On July 19, 2017, unidentified persons sprayed a corrosive odoriferous substance over a house and a car of Yulia Latynina, an observer of the “Novaya Gazeta” and the “Ekho Moskvy”, well-known for her criticism of the Russian authorities in connection with the assassination of Boris Nemtsov and the preferences to the leader of Chechnya. Eight persons suffered then, including two children and four elderly people. Yulia Latynina left Russia after the incident.
