Verdict in case of attack on Tumso in Sweden revised

The Court of Appeal has increased the sentence for the man convicted of attacking the Chechen blogger, Tumso Abdurakhmanov, up to 12 years in prison. The charge against his female accomplice was re-qualified under a milder article; her sentence was reduced from eight years to one and a half years.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 11, 2021, a court in Sweden found Russian citizens, Ruslan Mamaev and Elmira Shapiaeva, guilty of committing the attack on the Chechen blogger, Tumso Abdurakhmanov, and sentenced them to ten and eight years of imprisonment, respectively.

On April 1, the Lower Norrland Court of Appeal (CoA) issued a verdict on the case of the attempted murder of Tumso Abdurakhmanov. The appellate instance does not believe that the results of the investigation allow making a definite conclusion about the motives of the crime or the connection thereof with the Chechen leadership, the Swedish newspaper "Aftonbladet" has reported.

At the same time, the CoA found that the attacker (Ruslan Mamaev) had aggravating circumstances – in particular, that the attack took place while the blogger was asleep, and the purpose of the attack was murder. As a result, his prison term was increased from 10 to 12 years, the newspaper has noted.

The convicted woman (Elmira Shapiaeva) had no intention of killing the blogger, the CoA has ruled. The prosecution has too weak evidence that she acted with the aim of Tumso's death, so the appellate instance reclassified the charge from an article for complicity in an attempted murder into an article on complicity in an attack and reduced her prison term to one and a half years; she will be expelled from Sweden with a ban on entry for five years, the edition named "Dagens Juridik" has explained.
