Armenia rejects bill on abolition of martial law

Today, a member of the "Prosperous Armenia" Party has stated that the in-force martial law impedes all political processes in the country. However, the parliamentary Committee on Defence, National Security, and Internal Affairs has refused to consider a bill on the abolition of martial law.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Armenian opposition raised the issue of the Nikol Pashinyan's resignation immediately after the signing of the peace agreement with Azerbaijan, which entered into force on November 10, 2020. The consideration of the opposition initiative by the parliament is being hindered by the martial law still in force in the country.

Today, the oppositional faction "Prosperous Armenia" has proposed to abolish the current regime of martial law in the country. MP Arman Abovyan has presented the bill at the meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Defence, National Security, and Internal Affairs. "The martial law does not correspond to the situation in the country and is a great obstacle for all political processes," emphasized Arman Abovyan as quoted by the "Sputnik Armenia".

MPs from the ruling "My Step" bloc declared the need for the martial law regime in connection with large-scale military exercises initiated by Azerbaijan and Turkey. As a result, the parliamentary Committee on Defence, National Security, and Internal Affairs has rejected the bill presented by the opposition, the "News.Am" reports today.
