Georgian MFA put forward condition for border demarcation with Russia

Demarcation of the Russian-Georgian border is possible only after the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated after Vladimir Putin had instructed to delimit and demarcate the Russian-Georgian border.

The decree by Vladimir Putin, according to which the diplomat, Mikhail Petrakov, has been appointed his special representative for the delimitation and demarcation of the state border of Russia, was published on January 2 in the official Internet portal of legal information.

The issue of delimitation and demarcation of the Russian-Georgian border cannot be put on the agenda until Russia "de-occupies" the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and fully fulfils the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, the Georgian MFA has stated in response to the Mr Putin's appointment of Mr Petrakov as Russian President's special representative for delimitation and demarcation of the Russia's state borders with the CIS countries.

The Georgian MFA has called on Russia "to observe the fundamental norms of the international law, to withdraw the occupation troops and de-occupy Georgian territories," the "Channel One" of the Georgian TV reported in its website in the evening on January 3.
