Russian officer dies in Nagorno-Karabakh

A Russian officer was killed during demining operations near Shushi. The accident in the zone of recent hostilities occurred on December 17.

"An officer from the demining group of the International Anti-Mine Centre was seriously wounded ... He died on the way to the hospital," the "Interfax" quotes the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) as reporting.

The MoD has promised to provide help to the family of the perished officer.

On December 17 and 18, in Stepanakert, sappers found and removed 1334 explosive items, the MoD's website writes.

The demining of territories after the hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh may take a year, Alexander Perendjiev, a political analyst, has suggested. However, Vasily Dandykin, another expert, believes that thanks to their experience, Russian peacemakers will be able to cope with demining within a few months.
