Armenia's General Staff names reasons for defeat in Karabakh War

False information about the situation at the frontline was one of the reasons for the military defeat; and sending volunteers to the front was not justified, Movses Akopyan, a former head of the General Staff has stated.

The agreement to end hostilities in Karabakh was signed after two failed attempts to return Shushi, the key city in Karabakh, and became a way to avoid "collapse" at the front, Nikol Pashinyan, the Armenian Prime Minister, has stated.

On November 18, Movses Akopyan submitted a resignation letter from the post of the head of the Military Control Service of the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD). He named the incomplete mobilization among the main reasons for the failures at the front. The authorities decided to send volunteers, although the level of mobilization was 78% in Nagorno-Karabakh and 52% in Armenia. After the start of the war, they should have conducted the general mobilization within 48 hours, Mr Akopyan has stressed.

As reported by the "Sputnik-Armenia", Akopyan also noted that the army personnel had been seriously reduced.

He has also accused the Armenian authorities of lying about army successes in the course of conflict escalation.
