Two Azerbaijanis fined for riots in Kullar

Elmar Mekhtiev and Djeikhun Namazov, residents of Azerbaijan, have been released from criminal liability in the case of the riots in Kullar, but they must pay a 5000-rouble fine each. After mitigating the charges, Namazov and Mekhtiev have pleaded guilty and compensated the harm caused to victims, their advocate has explained.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 15, about 400 people took part in the protest action in the refugee camp set up on the Dagestani-Azerbaijani border. The rally escalated into clashes with law enforcers. Four law enforcers and ten Azerbaijani citizens were wounded.

In relation to Mekhtiev and Namazov, the proceedings were terminated on charges of damaging someone else's property, since "investigators failed to obtain enough proofs of their guilt," said the advocate, Murad Velikhanov.

"With account of the re-qualification, as well as the exclusion of unjustified charges of damaging property and participating in mass riots, my clients decided to admit their guilt," the advocate said.

According to his story, this gave rise to a motion to send the case to court not with an indictment, but with an appeal to terminate the criminal case.

Besides, Mekhtiev and Namazov have apologized to the policemen, who were recognized as victims in their case, including in writing, and also compensated them for the moral harm and material damage, the advocate has added.

As a result, the court decided to release them from criminal liability, and imposed a fine in the amount of 5000 roubles on each of them.
