Baku and Yerevan interpret Iran's assessment of Karabakh conflict in different way

Azerbaijan considered the statement voiced by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as an expression of support. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan has inaccurately translated the Ali Khamenei's statement so that they sound more complimentary, says Vardan Voskanyan, an expert on Iran.

Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that the country of Iran recognizes the Azerbaijan's right to "liberate" its territories, but at the same time noted the need to ensure the safety of people living in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Ali Khamenei warned against "placing terrorists" near the borders of Iran, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also spoke in favour of restoring the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and resolving the conflict peacefully, the "Sputnik Azerbaijan" reports.

The Azerbaijani MFA has stated that the Iran's Supreme Leader used the expression of "occupied territories." According to Vardan Voskanyan, an expert on Iran, the Azerbaijani MFA distorts the Ali Khamenei's statement, since the exact translation of the word used by the Grand Ayatollah is "captured," not "occupied."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 24, Baku announced the direct intervention of Yerevan in the Karabakh conflict, expressed in shelling attacks on the Azerbaijani troops from the territory of Armenia. In turn, Armenia counts on the Russia's help, but Moscow demonstrates its unwillingness to make a choice between the parties to the conflict.
