Instagram deletes post of Chechen newspaper post with caricatures on Charlie Hebdo

The Instagram administration has removed the post of the Chechen newspaper "Vesti Respubliki" (Republic's News) with caricatures on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, which had published caricatures on Prophet Muhammad. Chechen authorities have reproached Instagram for double standards.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the well-known Russian TV presenter, Ksenia Sobchak, had reproached the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, of "a surprisingly medieval understanding of an 'attack on values'." She has also criticized the Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov for his aggressive statements about French President, Emmanuel Macron.

"In its caricatures, the newspaper [Vesti Respubliki] did not offend anyone's national and religious feelings. Our newspaper has just shown its professional view on the 'creativity' of the French magazine," Akhmed Dudaev, the Chechnya's Minister for Information and Press, wrote on the Instagram. He has also noted that caricatures on Prophet Muhammad had not been removed from the account of the French magazine.

Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya, Director of the Centre for Conflict Analysis and Prevention, has treated the publications of the "Vesti Respubliki" as original ones. "They are within the legal sphere, and, unlike Khabib, without aggression," she wrote on the Facebook.
