Putin reports 5000 casualties in Karabakh

Armenia and Azerbaijan have lost about two thousand people each killed in the battles for Nagorno-Karabakh, the total number of casualties is approaching 5000, the Russian President Vladimir Putin has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Nagorno-Karabakh made public the lists of 40 other perished servicemen; in total, since the start of conflict escalation, the MoD reported 874 killed soldiers. The number of civilians killed since September 27 was 37, 116 others were wounded. On October 20, the Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) reported that since the onset of hostilities, 63 civilians were killed as a result of shelling, and 293 others were wounded.

President Putin has stressed that over the 10 years of the war in Afghanistan "13,000 USSR servicemen were killed, while during a short period, when the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh has aggravated, almost 5000 people perished."
