Baku court refuses to stop oppositionist Imanly's case

The judge has rejected the defence's petition demanding to stop the criminal prosecution of Mukhammed Imanly, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), accused of deliberately spreading coronavirus. The oppositionist treats the case against his as fabricated.

"The advocate, Asabali Mustafaev, has stated that there are no proofs that my son, being infected with coronavirus, had deliberately left home and created a threat to other people. The advocate has pointed out the absence of medical documents confirming that my son had been infected before his detention," Ramiz Imanly, Mukhammed's father, has stated at the trial.

According to his story, for three months, Mukhammed was not allowed to call his relatives; and the latter were not allowed to visit him in custody.

Asabali Mustafaev, the advocate, believes that Imanly's rights have been grossly violated; in particular, he was kept in custody for four days without a court judgement.

Ilkham Gusein, a member of the Presidium of the PFPA, has stated that Mukhammed is being persecuted for political reasons.

"After the July 16 action, repressions were launched against the PFPA; about 50 party members were detained," Mr Gusein has added.

Elshan Gasanov, the coordinator of the Union "For Freedom of Political Prisoners", has stated that the Union has recognized Mukhammed Imanly to be a political prisoner.
