KBR residents call attack on Nalchik unforgettable tragedy

On the 15th anniversary of the militants' attack on Nalchik, eyewitnesses have shared their memories of these events on social networks, commemorating the victims.

The armed attack on the capital of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) was undertaken 15 years ago, on October 13, 2005. The number of militants who attacked the city was at least 250 people. The attack killed 35 law enforcers and 15 civilians; 129 law enforcers and 66 civilians were wounded. As a result of the fighting in the city, 95 militants were killed.

Arsen Kanokov, the then head of the KBR, believes that one of the reasons for the attack on Nalchik was the authorities' excessively tough attitude to maximalists from among young Muslims.

In her comment to the post on Arsen Kanokov's page, the Instagram user kazeta6762 wrote that on October 13, 2005, her son was to be operated on. "I was standing at the door of the republic's maxillofacial surgery unit. Suddenly, I heard sounds of shooting; and then a white Volga car, riddled with gunfire, drove up to the hospital. The driver carried a girl covered in blood in his arms. I will never forget the shock I experienced then!" the user wrote in public 07.news.

Lubov Tkach, a social network user, said that she "almost every night, she saw the executed city in her dreams." "I remember that I endured it very hard ... naturally, I was worried about my relatives and friends."
