Court arrests father of minor accused of killing footballer Shakarashvili

The Tbilisi City Court has placed into custody Tamaz Khomasuridze, the father of the minor, who is accused of killing the football player, Giorgi Shakarashvili. The father is charged with threats, falsification of proofs and false testimonies.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 18, 2020, Giorgi Shakarashvili, a 19-year-old pupil of the academy of the Tbilisi Football Club (FC) "Saburtalo", was killed. Within the murder case, the son of Tamaz Khomasuridze was detained among others.

According to investigators, Khomasuridze, by using two mobile phones and two unregistered SIM cards, fabricated a correspondence between the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), who conducted the inquiry, and one of the witnesses in the case, made it public, and later gave false testimonies on the case. Khomasuridze, through media and social networks, threatened the case witnesses with repressions, the Georgia's General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) reports.

On September 12, the Tbilisi City Court ruled to place Khomasuridze in custody pending the inquiry into his case.

The trial took place several hours after Khomasuridze was formally charged with threats to witnesses in the case, falsification of proofs and false testimonies – all in order to help his son avoid possible criminal liability.
