Azerbaijani blogger Mekhman Guseinov recovers after surgery

At a Swiss clinic, doctors have successfully operated on Mekhman Guseinov, an Azerbaijani blogger and human rights defender, who is suffering from cancer. Now, the young man must undergo a long rehabilitation course, his brother said.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that rights defenders had supported fundraising for the blogger, linking his health condition with arrests and imprisonment. By June 18, 2020, the required amount was raised.

Mekhman Guseinov is the editor-in-chief of the socio-political magazine SANCAQ Production, and the author of popular investigations about officials' real estates, policemen's lawlessness and other social problems.

Emin Guseinov, Mekhman's brother and the executive director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), believes that the accelerated disease progress was facilitated by the stresses his brother had suffered from the pressure on him in Azerbaijan.

"By the end of October, Mekhman plans to return from Switzerland to Azerbaijan, where he will continue his struggle for human rights and journalistic investigations to expose corrupt officials in the highest echelons of power," Emin Guseinov has stated.

Ulvi Gasanli, a board member of the "Nida" Movement, has called Guseinov "a tireless lover of truth and a champion of human rights and freedom."
