Defence treats arrest of Azerbaijani activist Atakishiev unjustified
Tural Atakishiev, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), came to the police on a summon, but was arrested under the pretext of disobeying law enforcers, his advocate has stated.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tural Atakishiev, a PFPA member, was detained on August 7 and interrogated in connection with the action in support of the Azerbaijani Army; and on August 11, he was detained again. The court found him guilty of disobeying a policeman.
At night on July 15, Baku hosted an unsanctioned march in support of the Azerbaijani Army, which ended in clashes with the police. By August 1, 48 PFPA activists were arrested for taking part in the action.
Nemat Kerimli, an Atakishiev's advocate, has called the administrative case opened against Atakishiev "typical of oppositionists." "The protocol says that Atakishiev was walking down the street, he was arguing with someone on the phone; and when the police made a remark to him, he ignored it. This is a common scenario," Mr Kerimli has noted.
Earlier, the human rights organization "Amnesty International" expressed its concern about the persecution of the political opposition in Azerbaijan.
