Residents of Tbilisi commemorate victims of Soviet repressions

In Tbilisi, about 20 people took part in an action in memory of the victims of repression near the house where the NKVD was located in Soviet times. The descendants of those repressed took part in the mourning ceremony; they told about how they were touched by the great terror.

On July 30, at the meeting, they read out the names of the participants in the anti-Soviet uprising that took place from August 28 to September 5, 1924, under the leadership of Kote Abkhazi, Valentin Djugeli, Konstantin Andronikashvili and Kakutsa Cholokashvili, Irakli Khvadagiani, an employee of the NGO "Sovlab", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the action brought together about 20 people, mostly 60-70 years old – children or grandchildren of repression victims. In Georgia, authorities fail to pay due attention to the topic of repressions, Mr Khvadagiani has noted.

In Georgia, the Remembrance Day of Repression Victims is not an official date; and people come to pay tribute to victims in private, Irakli Yakobashvili, the director of the archive of the Georgian parliament, has explained.

Manana Tevzadze, a pensioner, said that her grandfather, the chairman of the Tbilisi city cell of the Social Democratic Party, was shot dead by Bolsheviks in 1924.

Levan Kalandarishvili has noted that his father was a military medic, who was accused, with his two colleagues, of an anti-Soviet plot; as a result, his two colleagues were sentenced to 10 years in prison, and Kalandarishvili was shot dead as the organizer.
