Court leaves Dagestani journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev in custody

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan pronounced a decision to extend for another month the arrest of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, a correspondent of the newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft), as well as Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev, who were involved as defendants in a case on financing of terrorism.

Abdulmumin Gadjiev pleads not guilty. Public prosecutors suggest that the defendant transferred money to accounts of the foundations led by preacher Israil Akhmednabiev (Abu Umar Sasitlinsky). The investigators consider the preacher as an organizer of terrorist financing through charitable foundations under the pretext of building mosques and helping the poor.

The investigator requested the court to extend the arrests of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Kemal Tambiev, and Abubakar Rizvanov until September 13, 2020. According to the investigator, the defendants are capable of leaving the territory of Russia illegally. Moreover, the investigator also noted that the defendants had got no doctor's opinions which would prevent them from being kept at a SIZO (pre-trial prison).
