Chechen Mufti's call for modest weddings perceived as informal recommendation

The instructions of the Mufti of Chechnya, Salakh Mezhiev, to hold modest weddings are only advisory in nature, Orientalists and political analysts believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mezhiev called for inviting a minimum of guests to the wedding, and reducing the motor cortege down to two cars. The statement is illogical amid the lifting of the ban on weddings in restaurants, Instagram users have indicated.

Ruslan Kutaev, the president of the international socio-political movement "Assembly of Caucasian Nations", believes that the Mufti "cares about people's safety." In his opinion, people should treat this call with understanding.

Isa Magomadov, a political analyst, is sure that Mezhiev's statement should not be taken seriously.

Large wedding motor corteges of many cars are a traditional element of almost any Chechen wedding, said Khasan Bakaev, a historian.

Analysts have noted that it is difficult to control the number of wedding guests; and we have to hope for their discipline. After lifting of the ban on weddings according to Sharia standards, Chechnya saw long wedding corteges, which caused Ramzan Kadyrov's anger; and he ordered to seize cars from the participants of wedding corteges.
