Chechen militant accused of attacking Pskov paratroopers

The case about the participation of Ruslan Bataev, a resident of Chechnya, in an attack on a company of the Airborne Forces (paratroopers) in 2000 has been brought to court. This is the second case against Bataev, already convicted for an attack on military servicemen in the village of Chervlyonnaya.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in January 2019, the Chechen Supreme Court (SC) found Bataev guilty of attacking Russian militaries in Chervlyonnaya in 1999. Bataev was sentenced to 14 years and six months in colony.

According to investigators, in September 1999, Bataev joined the “Sary-Sui Jamaat” gang, which, on October 4, 1999, together with other groupings led by Shamil Basaev and Khattab, attacked the militaries in the Shelkovskoi District of Chechnya. Then 15 soldiers of the federal troops were killed, other 28 ones were wounded.

On March 1, 2000, in the vicinity of the Chechen village of Ulus-Kert, fighters of the Pskov Airborne Division, entered into battle with a detachment of field commanders Shamil Basaev and Khattab. In total, 84 out of 90 Russian servicemen, including 13 officers, were killed; four others were wounded. The militants’ losses amounted to 370 people.
