NKR activist goes on hunger strike demanding to stop HPP construction

Alexander Kananyan, a resident of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), has gone on a hunger strike, demanding to stop the construction of small hydropower plants (HPPs) on the Trtu River and check the environmental safety of all HPPs in the region.

He wrote in his Facebook page that he demanded to suspend the construction of small HPPs, which "cause catastrophic damage to the environment." According to his version, the authorities "are destroying the water network of the NKR under the false pretext of ‘energy development’."

“Instead of building housing and roads, supporting minor and medium-sized businesses and other social and defence strategies, oligarchs are building dozens of small HPPs,” Mr Kananyan has written.

In his opinion, what he does "will serve to preserve the native nature and compatriots’ lives."

Alexander Kananyan has stated to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that should the NKR authorities "fail to fulfil the demands, he will also stop drinking water." He treats the situation with small HPPs as “absolutely intolerable” and threatened to continue his hunger strike until his demands were met.
