ECtHR appoints compensation to mother of missing resident of Chechnya

Russian investigators have failed to check statements of Khusein Badurgov's relatives that authorities has been involved in his disappearance in Grozny, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has concluded today, treating the investigation as inefficient. Badurgov's mother was awarded a compensation of 26,000 euros.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Khusein Badurgov, a 25-year-old resident of Chechnya, disappeared in Grozny under unclear circumstances in July 2012. Investigators failed to establish any suspects. A complaint on this case was submitted to the ECtHR in 2016.

According to the ECtHR's decision, Russian authorities had violated the article of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) that guarantees the right to life and an efficient investigation. Madnyat Dyshneeva, Khusein's mother, was awarded a compensation of 26,000 euros, the "Caucasian Knot" has translated the judgement, posted on the ECtHR's website.

From the very start of the investigation, Badurgov's relatives pointed to possible involvement of authorities in his disappearance, Ekaterina Vanslova, a lawyer of the Committee against Torture (CaT) has stressed. "However, the investigating bodies have failed to take any efficient steps to check this information," Ms Vanslova has commented the ECtHR's decision in the today's post on the CaT's website.
