Serzh Sargsyan rejects charge of embezzlement

Former Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan does not agree with the charge of embezzlement and treats a case against him as political persecution, his office reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Serzh Sargsyan, the third president of Armenia, has been charged with misappropriation of more than one million US dollars. The court pronounced the pre-trial restriction measure in the form of recognizance not to leave, the Special Investigating Service of Armenia reported on December 4.

Serzh Sargsyan rejected the charge of embezzlement of state funds, states a message posted on the page of the former president's office on Facebook. "This is a fabricated and absurd accusation, and the former president treats it as a political persecution," states the message as translated from Armenian by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The "Republican Party of Armenia" (RPA), led by Sargsyan, also called the criminal case "political persecution." According to the RPA, by using such steps, the authorities want to distract the attention of the society from acute problems.
