Ogtai Gyulyalyev underwent surgery in Istanbul clinic

Turkish doctors performed a neurosurgical treatment of Azerbaijani human rights defender Ogtai Gyulyalyev, who was injured in a road traffic accident. The surgery became the second after the accident, and Ogtai Gyulyalyev still stay in a coma, reports a spouse of the human rights defender.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 6, Ogtai Gyulyalyev was transported by special plane to an Istanbul clinic for medical treatment. Turkish doctors declared that Ogtai Gyulyalyev needed a surgery to pump out the fluid formed after cerebral edema.

On October 29, in Baku, Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Committee against Repression and Torture, was hospitalized after a press conference at which he outlined a plan for a campaign against torture. A car driver hit Ogtai Gyulyalyev at a pedestrian crossing, reported a son of the human rights defender. Azerbaijani oppositionists and human rights defenders have suggested that Ogtai Gyulyalyev was intentionally hit by a car. The victim underwent surgery and stays in a coma.

Today, Ogtai Gyulyalyev has undergone a surgery, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has been informed by Firuza Gyulyalyeva, a wife of the human rights defender.

The woman has also said that the doctors do not give unambiguous forecasts regarding the health state of her husband. "Ogtai still stays in a coma. The doctors say that the medical treatment will be continued through the coming months. They do not give any guarantees, but they say there are still chances that Ogtai will survive," said the spouse of the human rights defender.
