Photo portraits of deported Karachays trigger interest of various generations

Within the photo exhibition "Contrary To", dedicated to the 76th anniversary of deportation of Karachay nationals, 260 portraits of residents of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) were presented.

The exhibition was held on November 1 and 2, in the Kaisyn Kuliev Cultural Development Centre in the city of Karachayevsk; it presented photos of the KChR residents, who survived the 1943 Stalin deportation.

In the USSR, the deportation of Karachays began on November 2, 1943; as a result thereof, 69,267 people were resettled. Most of them perished on the road and in resettlement places.

"The project idea was to capture the faces, the expression of people's eyes, and to show that they had not been broken, they had returned and preserved their customs and traditions," Marika Khubieva, the author of the project, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"A total of 260 photo portraits were presented. Within two months we travelled around 30 dwelling settlements. People called us and gave contacts of their grandparents, who had survived the trials of deportation," the author of the project "Contrary To" has noted.

Ms Khubieva has added that the exhibition is targeted at any audience. "Many people are interested in the exhibition – from primary schoolchildren up to elderly people," said Marika Khubieva.
