Regina Gagieva's death highlights problem of domestic violence

In Vladikavkaz, 22-year-old Regina Gagieva died in a hospital from stab wounds, which, according to investigators, her former husband inflicted to her out of jealousy. While they were married, the man beat Regina Gagieva, a sister of the deceased woman said. The Regina Gagieva's death occurred amid the decriminalization of domestic violence, note North Ossetian journalists.

At night on September 25, Regina Gagieva, a resident of Vladikavkaz, to whom her former husband inflicted more than 10 stab wounds, died at the resuscitation ward of the republican hospital.

The woman spent several days in a coma and died without regaining consciousness, the "OsNova" reported on September 25. Journalists also reported that the former husband of Regina Gagieva was taken into custody.

According to Roxana Gagieva, a sister of the deceased woman, the husband beat Regina Gagieva, while they were married. "He kept her in permanent fear. While they were married, he beat her. She went to the police, but policemen treated the situation as family quarrels," said Roxana Gagieva as quoted by the "Kavkaz.Realii" on September 21.

The murder of Regina Gagieva occurred amid the decriminalization of domestic violence, notes Alan Tskhurbaev, the editor-in-chief of the North Ossetian magazine "Daryal". "We need to recognize the problem of domestic violence in Ossetia and initiate public discussion in society," Alan Tskhurbaev wrote in his blog on the "Caucasian Knot" on September 25.

Earlier, the "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, according to the Moscow Centre for Prevention of Violence "Anna", the general situation in the field of domestic violence has deteriorated since the decriminalization of domestic violence in Russia in February 2017.
