CTO in Chegem becomes second one since early 2019 in Kabardino-Balkaria

The counterterrorist operation (CTO), launched today in Chegem, has become the second one in Kabardino-Balkaria in 2019 after a special operation carried out in Nalchik in February.

Law enforcers were looking for militants who, according to the FSB, were plotting a terror act. According to sources, two militants were killed in a shootout in the CTO zone.

The earlier CTO was announced in Nalchik on February 27. Then, three persons were killed in a shootout. They stayed in a private house cordoned off by the law enforcers. No one else was injured. According to the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), the killed suspects were plotting terror acts in the republic.

In the Chegem District, according to the "Caucasian Knot", the CTO legal regime was recently introduced on October 13, 2016. As a result of the special operation, three persons were killed, who, according to the NAC, were involved in attacks on law enforcers.

In 2018, the number of armed incidents in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) grew three times as compared to 2017. In 2017, one armed incident was registered, in the course of which one person, a suspected militant, was killed, while in 2018, three armed incidents were registered in the republic, in which 5 militants and one law enforcer were killed.
