Zoo defenders tell about a new wave of extermination of animals in Sochi

Animals and birds in Sochi are poisoned, which endangers people too, local residents assert.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in April, Sochi zoo defenders counted about a hundred deaths of stray animals from some unknown poison, which is scattered throughout the city. In their opinion, this is how the authorities got ready for the start of holiday season.

Sochi residents told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that they often see dead animals in the streets. "Now it's not as obvious as it was in May. But dead animal can be seen in city streets. I don't believe that they have all died by themselves," Olga Savelieva has noted.

Mothers of small children, walking along Tsvetnoy Boulevard said they saw workers gathering dead pigeons poisoned by someone.

"I asked the workers who was poisoning birds; and they said that they didn't know. I am very afraid for my son – he's just one year old and, while playing, he pulls everything into his mouth from the ground. If the birds die, then, there's some poison," said Svetlana Olshanskaya.

Olga Noskovets, a zoo defender, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that activists managed to conduct an expertise and establish the poison used to kill dogs and cats. However, "it remains a mystery how this poison, which is sold at pharmacies by prescriptions, is sold to poisoners," the activist has stated, adding that "so far, we've received no answers to our appeals to law enforcement bodies."
