Agile Spirit 2019 military exercises aimed at Georgia's defence capacity

The multinational military exercises Agile Spirit 2019 have started in Georgia. They are intended to master defensive skills, which corresponds to the country's position, military experts believe.

On July 27-August 9, military servicemen from 14 countries will take part in the exercises, which fully comply with the Georgia's policy "More NATO in Georgia – more Georgia in NATO", Major-General Vladimir Chachibaya, the Commander of the Georgian Defence Forces, has stated as quoted by the Georgian Ministry of Defence.

According to Mr Chachibaya, these exercises differ from previous ones in conducting "integrated practical exercises in three country's testing ranges."

The content of the exercises is caused by the August 2008 war and the "geopolitical challenges," believes Vakhtang Maisaya, doctor of military-political sciences. Georgia needs a defence strategy to protect its integrity, he has stated.

Irakli Aladashvili, the editor-in-chief of the "Arsenali" military journal, has noted that during the five-day war of 2008, Georgian militaries "failed to repel the offensive of Russian armoured groups and aviation."
