Hunger strike in front of Georgian parliament building stopped

The last two participants of the hunger strike with the demand for the resignation of the Georgian Interior Minister stopped their protest action due to the recommendation of the medical officers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 23, in Tbilisi, five young people set up tents and went on hunger strike. They stated that they would continue their protest action until the activists' demands for the resignation of Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakhariya were met. Out of five hunger-strikers, two were hospitalized, but on June 27, advocate Beka Basilaya and doctor Vakhtang Sikharulidze joined the protest action. Then four hunger-strikers stopped the action after losing consciousness. On July 8, only Beka Basilaya and Vakhtang Sikharulidze continued their hunger strike in front of the parliament building.

The health state of Beka Basilaya, who was on the hunger strike for 19 days, and of Vakhtang Sikharulidze, who refused to accept food for 17 days, deteriorated, and they stopped their protest action, the "New-Georgia" reported.

"Initially, our position was declared to continue the hunger strike until our health state would become critical ... We will make Giorgi Gakhariya resign very soon," said Beka Basilaya.

"No position is worth a person's life," said Shota Digmelashvili, one of the organizers of the protests, while commenting on the end of the hunger strike, as quoted by the "Sputnik Georgia".

The protests have been continuing for the 24th day.
