Court upholds refusal to apply CER to convict involved in Politkovskaya's murder
The court has dismissed the appeal against the denial of the conditional early relief (CER) of Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, sentenced to 11 years in prison for involvement in the murder of the journalist, Anna Politkovskaya.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 8, a court in Ryazan refused to satisfy the petition to apply CER to Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov. The administration of the colony, where the convict is serving his sentence, as well as the prosecutor's office, spoke against the satisfaction of the Pavlyuchenkov's petition.
Anna Politkovskaya, who was well-known for her articles on Northern Caucasus, was killed in the house, where she lived, in Moscow on October 7, 2006. On December 14, 2012, the court sentenced Pavlyuchenkov to 11 years in prison under the articles of the murder and illegal arms circulation. Five other figurants in the case were sentenced to different prison terms.
Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, a former policeman, confessed to his involvement in the murder and made a deal with investigators. At the trial, he confirmed that he was shadowing Politkovskaya. "I hadn't known that an attempt was being prepared on her; and I sincerely repent," the RIA "Novosti" quoted him as saying.
