Azerbaijani activist claims threat of his re-arrest in Georgia
The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia filed an appeal against the decision of the court of Marneuli to release Azerbaijani citizen Avtandil Mamedov on bail after his detention at a request from Baku.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 17, Avtandil Mamedov was detained in Tbilisi at the request of Azerbaijan, where he was accused of fraud. Azerbaijani activists say they do not believe in the accuracy of the charge and fear that Avtandil Mamedov can face an unjust trial and torture in Azerbaijan. On June 19, the court in Marneuli decided to release Avtandil Mamedov on bail for the period of consideration of the issue on his extradition.
Activists Avtandil Mamedov and Elchin Namazov, being in emigration, established the "Institute for the Protection of Rights and Freedoms" with the aim to inform international organizations about the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, as well as to support Azerbaijani immigrants in Georgia.
Avtandil Mamedov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he was not released from custody until June 25 when a cash deposit of 3000 laris had been made. Avtandil Mamedov noted that his family members did not have such an amount of money and it was raised by his friends and activists.
According to Avtandil Mamedov, the Georgian Prosecutor's Office has appealed against the court's decision to release him from custody and is seeking his arrest before completion of the consideration of the issue on his extradition. Avtandil Mamedov himself has filed a counter appeal and seeks release without bail.
