Attack on policemen in Grozny was second this year in Chechnya

The attack on a DPS (road-and-patrol service) unit, committed in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, in which one policeman and two attackers were killed, was the second since the start of 2019 in the republic.

The attack on policemen was committed on June 23, 2019, in Lorsanov Street in the Leninsky District of Grozny, not far from the residence of the head of Chechnya and the Grozny City complex. According to a law enforcement source, a DPS inspector perished. In total, there were two attackers, one of them was killed on the spot, the other – some time later, in a shootout, said the source.

The previous attack on policemen in Chechnya occurred at night on January 26. According to the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), a post in the outskirt of the dwelling settlement of Sernovodskoye was shelled from submachine guns; two law enforcers were wounded; later, one of the attackers was found dead in the forest and identified as a 24-year-old resident of Ingushetia. Local residents noted that the attack of a single person on law enforcers raised many questions. The MIA reported that a search for possible casualty's accomplices gave no results. Later the "Islamic State" (IS), terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, claimed responsibility for the attack.

On January 23, 2019, the Chechen MIA reported that in 2018, a total of 21 suspected members of the armed underground were killed, compared with 18 in 2017. Thus, the MIA confirmed the data of the "Caucasian Knot" about the number of militants and alleged members of the armed underground killed in 2018. Amid the increased number of killed alleged militants, Chechen residents criticized the authorities' statements about the victory over terrorism in the republic.
