Action calling for resignation of Georgian President held in Tbilisi
The participants in the action demanded resignation of Salome Zurabishvili, President of Georgia; they distributed potatoes among passersby, explaining that this is a reminder of bribery during the election campaign.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Salome Zurabishvili, supported by the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party, won 59.52% of all the votes at the second round of the presidential election on November 28, 2018, while Grigol Vashadze was the runner-up with 40.48%. During the election campaign, Mr Vashadze's office in Kutaisi declared attempts to bribe voters.
On June 17, the organization of Georgian emigrants "Together at home in Georgia" held a rally demanding the resignation of Salome Zurabishvili, stating that she rules the country just formally. Not far from the building of the presidential administration, participants of the action gave out potatoes to passersby, explaining that this is a reminder of bribing voters," Salome Chelidze, the head of the organization, said on air of the "Rustavi-2" Georgian TV Company (the statement was translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent).
According to Ms Chelidze, the action will last until Ms Zurabishvili resigns. Besides, activists plan holding similar actions in the country's regions.
