Azerbaijan does not recognize parliamentary elections in South Ossetia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijani described the holding of elections in South Ossetia "as a gross violation of the norms of international law."

On June 9, South Ossetia held the parliamentary elections. The local Central Election Commission (CEC) declared them valid.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has stated that it does not recognize the elections held in South Ossetia. "The MFA of Azerbaijan once again confirms the respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. In this regard, the MFA of Azerbaijan declares non-recognition of the so called elections held in South Ossetia," the Azerbaijani MFA announced.

Georgia considers Abkhazia and South Ossetia as the territories occupied by Russia.

Meanwhile, foreign observers noted the democratic nature and transparency of the recent voting.
