Film by Kantemir Balagov from KBR to be screened at "Zerkalo" Festival

At the "Zerkalo" (Mirror) International Film Festival, Russia will be represented by the film "Dylda" (Beanpole) by Kantemir Balagov, a film director from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), the organizers of the festival have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 17, Balagov's film "Dylda" was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an award for the "Queer Palm" an award for the best LGBT-relevant film. This film also received a prize for the best director's work.

The nomination for the "Queer Palm" may adversely affect the prospects for screening the "Dylda" in Russia, but the artistic value of the film will be crucial, professionals of the Russian film industry believe.

The main contest will present nine films from 15 countries, including "The End of the Season", presented jointly by Azerbaijan, Germany and Georgia, the "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" writes.

The Balagov's debut film "Tesnota" (Tightness, or Congestion) triggered lively debates. In his homeland, in the KBR, some adherents of "traditions" condemned him for departing from the national identity. Kantemir Balagov was nominated for the "Caucasian Knot" contest "Hero of the Caucasus-2016" for not being afraid to speak in the art language about what is being hushed up.
