Film by KBR director screened at Cannes Film Festival

The film "Dylda" (Lanky Fellow) by Kantemir Balagov, a filmmaker from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) was met with a storm of applause at the Cannes Film Festival. The film is nominated for the Queer Palm Award – for films on the LGBT topic. Mr Balagov now plans to film a story about the today's residents of the Caucasus.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2017, Balagov's debut film "Tesnota" (Tightness) won the main prize in the "Special Look", the second most important competitive programme of the Cannes Film Festival.

The film "Dylda" is on the fate of women after World War II. "This is a story about how women, who by nature should give life to humans, were hard to return to peaceful life after the war," said Kantemir Balagov.

The director from Nalchik has added that he plans to return to the Caucasian topics.

"The nomination for the Queer Palm annoys me a little, because it greatly simplifies the relationships of the heroines. It’s a story that a human needs a human, not a woman needs a woman," the "Daily Billboard" quotes Mr Balagov as saying.

The nomination for the Queer Palm Award has caused distrust of the film among Russian social network users. Thus, some of them expressed doubts that in the first years after the blockade of Leningrad, LGBT people lived in the city.
