BCA upholds verdict to PFPA activists

The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has upheld the verdict to the activists of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), convicted within the case of illegal financing the party. Their defence has stated that it will seek for an acquittal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 27, 2019, the court found five PFPA activists guilty of money laundering. The verdict is unjustified and unfair, and therefore it will be appealed against, the convicts' advocates have stated.

On May 8, the BCA dismissed all the convicts' complaints and upheld the decision of the first-instance court, the convicts' advocates told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"The BCA failed to conduct an objective hearing," Ilkhama Gasanova, a Rustamov's advocate, has stated.

In her opinion, it is absurd to accuse Salekh Rustamov of illegal entrepreneurship in Azerbaijan, while he lived and ran his business in Russia.

Agil Laidjev, another advocate, believes that all the convicts "had committed no crimes"; and the sentence was rendered "with no reliable evidence." He said that the defence will file a complaint with the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan.
