Chechen authorities oblige public employees to take part in May Day action

In Chechnya, May Day demonstrations will traditionally gather tens of thousands of people, the Federation of Trade Unions in Chechnya announces. Public sector employees and students claim being obliged to take part in the festive event.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in May 2018, according to the Council of Trade Unions in Chechnya, 120,000 people took part in a festive rally-concert held on the occasion of May Day in Grozny. Local residents reported that public sector employees were obliged to take part in the festive event.

On May 1, Grozny will host a festive demonstration, a concert, and folk festivals. The May Day demonstration in Chechnya is to be organized by the Federation of Trade Unions in Chechnya.

Grozny public sector employees report that they were notified of the need to participate in the upcoming May Day demonstration.

"All the ministries got 'from above chiefs' orders regarding the number of people to be sent to the May Day demonstration. All employees of public institutions and enterprises are obliged to come [to the festive action]," said public sector employee Maret.
