Officials suggest restricting foreign TV channels in Armenia

Foreign TV channels should be removed from the package of state TV channels and transferred to private digital TV channels, said Tigran Akopyan, the head of the Armenia's National Commission on TV and Radio.

On April 22, Tigran Akopyan, the head of the Armenia's National Commission on TV and Radio, submitted to members of the Armenian parliament an annual report on the activities of the commission, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports in a broadcast on YouTube from the parliament building.

"Foreign TV channels should be removed from the state multiplex package (a set of TV and radio channels transmitted over a single digital channel, note of the 'Caucasian Knot')," stated Tigran Akopyan (as translated from Armenian by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent).

According to Tigran Akopyan, the US CNN and the Russian "Russia", "Culture", and "Channel One" should be transferred to a private digital multiplex package.

On April 10, at the meeting of the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports of the National Assembly, Narine Tukhikyan, an MP from the "My Step" faction, mentioned anti-Armenian programmes allegedly broadcasted by a Russian TV Channel, reported "Aravot" on April 18. Tigran Akopyan, the head of the Armenia's National Commission on TV and Radio, agreed "that created a certain threat to the information security of Armenia."
