Residents of Armenia criticize authorities' decision to celebrate Citizen's Day

The Armenian authorities allocated about 257,000 US dollars for the celebration of the Citizen's Day. The money should have been spent on solving urgent problems, the residents of Armenia interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" believe.

The new holiday, the Citizen's Day of Armenia, will be celebrated on the last Saturday of April. It is not connected with the political victory over the former regime; it personifies the triumph of civil thinking, Artak Zeinalyan, the Minister of Justice, has stated. Still, opponents to the novelty associate the holiday with the date of Serzh Sargsyan's resignation from the post of Prime Minister.

"It's a waste of state funds to fix one's own fame in the calendar ... People have other more pressing everyday needs," Ani Samsonyan, an MP from the "Enlightened Armenia" faction, wrote on her Facebook.

To celebrate the Citizen's Day is a right decision; it should be marked at a large scale, Aida Mkrtchyan, an Armenian resident, said in her turn.

Emil Babayan believes that for this money a good tomograph (body scanner) could be bought, which for years will save lives; or the money could be spent on solving other important problems.

Norair Iskandaryan, a resident of Yerevan, believes that such holidays are invented in order to distract society from real problems.

"If they really want to mark some holiday, let them celebrate May 9, and make donations to large and hungry families on this day," said Ani Petrosyan.
