Figurant of conflict in Armenian village left under arrest amid protests
The grandson of the former headman of the village of Zartonk in Armenia, who opened fire during a conflict with his fellow villagers, has been released under recognizance not to leave. The second detainee was arrested for two months; but villagers demand to release him.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the shooting took place on April 13 during a conflict of supporters and opponents of the village headman (elder). Five people were hospitalized. After the incident, Paruir Sargsyan, the headman, resigned.
The court accused Narek Melkonyan and Grair Pogosyan, who were detained during the conflict, of hooliganism.
The villagers found the judgement to leave Grair Pogosyan under arrest to be unfair. Garik Karapetyan, a villager, said that during the conflict, Pogosyan had just defended his father. He also announced new protests to be organized in Yerevan with a demand to release Grair Pogosyan.
