Victims of Maraga tragedy commemorated in Armenia and NKR

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) and Armenia have held events in memory of the victims of the tragedy in the village of Maraga. We need to ensure that the international community knows what happened in the village 27 years ago, said Larisa Alaverdyan, the first Ombudsperson of Armenia.

On April 10, 1992, at least 43 local residents were killed during a conflict in Maraga. Besides, at least 50 villagers were taken hostage; 19 of them never returned to Maraga.

On April 10, 2019, mourning events were held in all district centres of the NKR, as well as in the village of Nor-Maraga (New Maraga), where residents of the Maraga village, who moved during the Karabakh War, live now, a source from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Tourism of Armenia, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Armenia should recognize the tragic events in Maraga as genocide, initiate legal proceedings and attract those guilty to responsibility, the Ombudsperson, Larisa Alaverdyan, who also the head of the NGO "Against Legal Arbitrariness", has stated.

"The international law makes it possible to start proceedings in absentia, without the participation of the defendants. The recognition of the crimes committed in Maraga as genocide will be of fundamental importance for settling the Karabakh conflict," Ms Alaverdyan believes.
