Tbilisi authorities promise housing to explosion victims

The head of the district self-government has promised to temporarily resettle all the families affected by the gas explosion in a high-rise apartment building in Tbilisi. The city Mayor has stated that gas leak detectors will be installed in residential buildings.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 7, an explosion occurred in a multi-storey building in the Digomi District of Tbilisi. Eight people were hospitalized, 15 families were evacuated from their apartments. According to gas industry experts, a tenants' violation of gas equipment operation rules has caused the explosion.

Some 15-20 families, who cannot return to their apartments before the technical examination of the house is completed, will receive temporary housing. "Those, who have a desire, will go to their relatives, and those, who have nowhere to go, will be accommodated in hotels," said Irma Zavradashvili, the head of the district council (gamgebeli) of Didube as quoted by the "News-Georgia on April 7. According to her story, later, these families will be provided with apartments, rented by the district authorities.

The apartment house is cordoned off by the police; the supplies of water, electricity and gas are suspended. Forensic experts are examining the venue of the accident.

Kakha Kaladze, the Tbilisi Mayor, has announced tougher rules for the use of gas equipment in homes. According to his story, special detectors will be installed in residential buildings to detect any gas leakages.
