"Muslim Unity" activist released in Azerbaijan

Relatives of Anar Djabbarov, extradited to Azerbaijan from Turkey, inform that the charge of drug dealing has been lifted, and he is back at large.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 22, 2019, Anar Djabbarov, an activist of the "Muslim Unity" movement, was brought to Baku. Rights defenders treated his extradition as unlawful and linked Djabbarov's persecution with the conflict in Nardaran.

In November 2015, during a special operation, conducted in Nardaran, two law enforcers and five local residents were killed; mass arrests of supporters of the "Muslim Unity" followed the tragedy.

According to Khokyuma Djabbarova, Anar's mother, her son was told that the criminal case against him was closed because the drugs had nothing to do with him.

Bakhruz Bairamov, Anar's advocate, has noted that the closure of a case initiated under the article of "drug dealing" is a "very rare case."

Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the coordinator of the Centre for the Protection of Political Prisoners, has positively treated Anar's release. "This is a rare case when an activist is released by stopping the case. However, his case was too improbable. Anar Djabbarov was detained in Turkey, but there he was not charged with drug dealing; it turned out that he had brought drugs from Turkey, which, given the airport control, is almost impossible," Mr Gyulyalyev is sure.
