Ingush elder Akhmed Barakhoev wants to meet rights defenders

The Ingush elder, Akhmed Barakhoev, who is on a hunger strike in the SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Nalchik, has demanded a meeting with the presidential adviser on civil society development and human rights, his advocate, Fatima Urusova, has stated.

On March 26, residents of Ingushetia came out to a non-sanctioned action in Magas; on March 27, clashes with law enforcers began. On April 3, protest leaders, Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Barakh Chemurziev were arrested for ten days each.

Mr Barakhoev has explained that his decision to go on a hunger strike is politically motivated.

"By this action, he hopes to draw attention to the return of illegally alienated lands and to corruption among officials; he also expresses his protest against lawlessness of the authorities and law enforcers in Ingushetia," Ms Urusova has stated.
