Islamic conference in Grozny held with heightened security measures
Grozny has hosted the international conference "Islam – Message of Mercy and Peace", held with the participation of delegates from 43 countries. It was accompanied by enhanced security measures.
The event was attended by 250 theologians, who discussed interrelations of Russia with the Islamic world, and problems of Islamophobia, a source from the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) of Chechnya said.
"The forum condemned the terror act in New Zealand and adopted a resolution calling to prevent the spread of intolerance to other religions in mass media, and incitement of hatred," said the SAM source.
During the conference, Ramzan Kadyrov was awarded the "Order of the Star of Jerusalem" by the decision of Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, the "Grozny-Inform" Agency reports.
Earlier, Orientalists said that Kadyrov has ambitions to become the leader of Russian Muslims, but he is unlikely to be able to achieve his goals.
"Kadyrov claims to be the leader of the Muslim community of Russia, and to represent it in the international arena," said Shamil Sultanov, the head of the Centre for Strategic Studies "Russia-Islamic World", adding that this does not mean that Chechnya can become the spiritual centre of Russian Muslims.
