ECtHR obliges Russia to pay compensations to 19 Georgian citizens

Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has awarded from 2,000 to 15,000 euros to 19 Georgian citizens expelled from Russia in 2006.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Georgian authorities filed a lawsuit against Russia at the ECtHR back on March 26, 2007. On July 3, 2014, the ECtHR defined that Russia had violated a number of provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). On July 3, 2015, Georgia claimed 70.32 million euros from Russia. On January 31, 2019, the ECtHR awarded 1500 Georgian citizens with compensations of 10-15 thousand euros. The total compensation amount was 10 million euros.

The ECtHR has finalized the consideration of the case "Berdzenishvili et al versus Russia" dealing with administrative arrests and deportation of Georgian citizens in October 2006. The judges unanimously admitted violations of the rights of 19 people, awarding them compensations from 2,000 to 15,000 euros, the ECtHR reports on its website.

In the opinion of the ECtHR, in the majority of deportees' cases, ECHR's articles were violated, guaranteeing the right to liberty and security, the prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment, and the right to an efficient remedy. Besides, most of the applicants had been detained by the police or immigration services and fined.
