Chechen law enforcers launch campaign against wearing camouflage

The popular wearing of elements of military uniforms by Chechen residents undermines the law enforcers' authority and scares tourists away, law enforcers have stated. Raids were conducted in the Gudermes District, during which policemen warned men about the inadmissibility of wearing camouflage and other military clothes.

In the district, policemen held explanatory talks with local residents, who wear police and military uniforms, Yusup Baisultanov, the head of the ROVD (District Interior Division), has explained.

He believes that wearing such clothes in public places is unacceptable. "By doing so, these impostors look like law enforcers. We kindly ask the residents, whose life has nothing to do with law enforcement bodies, not to wear elements of camouflage and military uniforms," the "Chechnya Today" quotes Mr Baisultanov as saying on February 14.

Because of the popularity of camouflage clothes, it seems that there are a lot of law enforcers in the streets; and this scares tourists away, Turpal-Ali Ersabiev, the head of the traffic police of the Gudermes District, has explained.

Local residents told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about a direct ban on wearing such clothes. According to their version, on February 14, law enforcers' raids were conducted in Gudermes, during which policemen stopped the men wearing elements of camouflage uniforms.
