Chechnya and Dagestan fix no deadline for border demarcation

The authorities of Chechnya and Dagestan have agreed to fix the mutual border by the end of 2019. The parties have reached an understanding on this issue; it remains to finalize technical issues, said Khizri Shikhsaidov, the Speaker of the Dagestani Parliament. Both authorities do not claim for any territories, Magomed Daudov, the head of the Chechen Parliament, has stated.

On February 5, the Dagestan delegation arrived in Grozny to discuss the mutual border. The meeting passed without conflicts, said Shamil Khadulaev, a Dagestani activist, showing a fragment of the map with the border passing across Lake Kezenoi-Am.

"Both Speakers have stated that we have no disagreements on delimitation; it will be resolved with account for the interests of both regions," said an employee of the office of the head and the government of Chechnya.

According to his version, rumours circulated on the Internet that "some territories have been transferred to Chechnya or vice versa have nothing to do with reality and are aimed at creating tensions."

However, the border issues with the neighbouring regions raise questions among Chechen residents.

"The topic is very delicate and needs a thorough approach and well-considered decisions. But, as far as we can judge by our authorities' actions, they have no clear vision of the situation," said Isa, a historian.

The border agreement caused mass protests in Ingushetia; however, there were no protest actions in Chechnya; some republic's residents have noted that the border issue should be closed while preserving its territory.
