Pyatigorsk activists condemn homophobia of "Yabloko" leader in KBR
The position of the head of the "Yabloko" Party in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) is contrary to the principles of the party that supported sexual minorities, said the LGBT "Solidarity" Movement from Stavropol. The party does not share Khakim Kuchmezov's homophobic statements, the press service of the "Yabloko" Party has stated.
According to activists, the leader of the KBR's "Yabloko" branch in his e-mail has treated homosexuals as "sick persons", referring to the "conclusion of the World Health Organization (WHO)."
However, on May 17, 1990, the WHO General Assembly excluded homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses.
The "Yabloko" Party "positions itself as a liberal political force and officially stands for human rights and the rights of LGBT people," the activists have reminded.
On January 15, 2019, the "Yabloko" Party called on the Russian president to "stop killings in Chechnya" and "persecutions on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity."
The message about the sharp refusal of the "Yabloko" leader in the KBR to cooperate with the LGBT movement caused debates on the Instagram. The overwhelming majority of comments contain insults of the LGBT community and claims that "there is no place for such people in the Caucasus." Many users have supported Mr Kuchmezov's stance.
